Elafonisos Guide.

Elafonisos is a tiny island just off the southern Peloponnese, best known for Simos Beach and its pale sand and clear shallow water. It is ideal as a beach-focused stop within a longer mainland road trip.

Best for

Soft sand, shallow turquoise water and a short island escape

How long

2–3 days

Getting there

A very short ferry crossing runs from Pounta in the Peloponnese to Elafonisos.

Plan your stay

A small, beach-first island that works best as a slow stop.

Elafonisos is about pale sand, shallow turquoise water and switching off. It is perfect within a Peloponnese road trip, but it does not need an overfilled itinerary.

Give Simos proper time

The island's most famous beach is the main draw, so avoid treating it as a quick photo stop.

Stay for the evening

The island feels most enjoyable when you are not rushing back to the mainland after the beach.

Pair it with the Peloponnese

It works especially well with nearby Mani or Monemvasia as part of a longer route.

Where to stay

Stay close to the port town for restaurants and easy ferry logistics, or near Simos if the beach is the entire point of your stay.

Getting around

The island is small, but a car or scooter helps when you want to move easily between beaches and accommodation.

How long to stay

Two or three nights is enough for a restorative beach stop. Add more only if you specifically want very slow days.

Good to know

Before you go

The island is small and summer demand is high, so accommodation is worth booking ahead if you are travelling in peak season.
