Beach, island & safari.
A guide built around the two very different sides of my trip: Zanzibar for the beach and island stay, and Nyerere National Park for the safari experience.

Zanzibar
The beach side of the trip
My Zanzibar stay was centred around the coast: pale sand, palms, warm-looking turquoise water and the kind of resort days where the beach is the main event. I stayed at Blue Bay Resort Zanzibar, which gave me a simple base for the island part of the trip before pairing it with safari travel.

Nyerere National Park · Tanzania
The safari side
My safari was in Nyerere National Park, a completely different side of the trip from Zanzibar. The small-aircraft journey and game drives changed the scenery almost immediately. From the vehicle I saw giraffes, elephants and lions, as well as hippos in the water — some of the moments that made this part of the trip so memorable.

Safari experience
Wildlife from the vehicle
Giraffes out in the open, elephants moving through the greenery, hippos gathered in the water and lion sightings made the game drives feel completely different from one another. These are the moments I actually saw and photographed in Nyerere.
Safari logistics
Transfers, timings & packing
For a safari such as Nyerere, the smoothest option is a package that includes the internal flight or road transfer, park drives and accommodation. Pack light neutral layers, SPF, insect repellent, closed shoes and a small bag for the vehicle; early starts and warm afternoons are part of the rhythm.
The bigger guide
One trip, two completely different experiences.
This page brings the Zanzibar beach stay and my Nyerere National Park safari together. As I add the accommodation and practical details, it will become the main planning hub for combining both parts of the trip.
Practical guide
Getting around
Zanzibar is easiest with pre-booked private transfers, a driver for day trips or a hire car if you are confident with local driving. Public dala-dalas are cheap but slow and less predictable. For a safari in mainland Tanzania, use the arranged lodge transfer or light-aircraft/road connection included with your safari—self-driving is not the sensible option for most first-time visitors.
Best areas to stay
Choose the east coast for long beach days and a resort feel; Nungwi or Kendwa for calmer swimming and sunset evenings; Stone Town for history and a short stay at the beginning or end. For mainland safari, stay inside or close to your chosen park so game drives do not become long transfer days.
Best things to do
In Zanzibar, give yourself proper beach time, add Stone Town and choose one water or spice-farm day depending on your interests. In Nyerere, the focus is the game drives: give yourself at least two nights so early morning and late afternoon wildlife viewing do not feel rushed.
