Zaandam

Colourful Zaanse façades, playful architecture and an easy change of pace from Amsterdam.

The feel of it

Traditional Zaanse shapes, stacked into something unmistakably modern.

Zaandam is instantly recognisable for the green wooden-house shapes that appear throughout the centre. It makes a compact stop for architecture, photographs and a slower wander away from Amsterdam's busiest streets.

Start with the architecture

The stacked green-and-blue façades around the centre make the first impression. Give yourself time to walk around them rather than treating the station area as somewhere to rush through.

Keep the day simple

Zaandam works well with an unhurried plan: explore the centre, stop for coffee or lunch and leave room to wander rather than packing the day with attractions.

Pair it with Zaanse Schans

For windmills and traditional wooden houses as well, combine Zaandam with Zaanse Schans for a fuller look at the Zaan region.

Best for

Architecture lovers, a Netherlands day trip and anyone wanting a different side of the Zaan region.
