Oslo · Bergen · Flåm · Voss
Norway: Oslo to Bergen via Flåm & Voss.
A route built around one of Norway’s most beautiful rail journeys, with city time in Oslo and Bergen plus the fjord landscapes of Flåm and Voss.
Best for: Seven to nine nights, with room for the journey itself
01
Begin in Oslo
Start with Oslo for a balance of museums, waterfront walks and city energy. It is a strong first stop before the scenery becomes the focus.
02
Take the train to Bergen
This is a proper travel day, not just a transfer: the Bergen Line takes roughly 6½–7 hours between Oslo and Bergen, with several departures most days. The scenery changes from city edges and forest to lakes, mountain villages, the open Hardangervidda plateau, snow around Finse, then waterfalls and steep valleys on the approach to Voss and Bergen. Book early through Vy: fares are variable, but I would budget roughly NOK 300–1,500 one way depending on the date, departure and how far ahead you book. Choose a daytime service, keep your camera within reach and reserve the whole day for it.
03
Add Flåm for the fjord landscape
Flåm is small but unforgettable for its setting. It works best when you arrive with enough time to walk, take in the water and avoid treating it as a rushed photo stop.
04
Use Voss as the active contrast
Voss adds lakes, mountains and a more outdoorsy feel to the route. It is a good place to slow down or build in an activity day.
05
Finish in Bergen
Bergen is a fitting final stop: colourful, walkable and surrounded by steep hills and water. Give yourself at least two nights if you can.

Practical guide
Getting around
- • Oslo and Bergen are straightforward on foot and by local tram, metro or bus.
- • The Oslo–Bergen train is the backbone of this route; book key dates early and choose seats with the views in mind.
- • Flåm connects by rail and ferry/boat routes depending on your itinerary; Voss is easy to reach by train.
- • A car is optional, not essential—use one only if you want fjord detours beyond the rail-and-boat route.
Best areas
- • Oslo: Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen for waterfront access, Grünerløkka for a livelier neighbourhood feel.
- • Bergen: central Bergen near Bryggen for first visits, or Nordnes for quieter harbour walks.
- • Flåm: stay close to the station/harbour if you are only there briefly; Voss is a good base for a more active stop.
Best things to do
- • Oslo: waterfront museums, the Opera House roof and a neighbourhood dinner.
- • Take the Oslo–Bergen train as a full scenic day rather than a transfer to rush.
- • In Bergen, see Bryggen and take a viewpoint; in Flåm and Voss, let the fjord and mountain landscape set the pace.
