Ticino · Switzerland

Lake Lugano.

A Swiss lake escape with an Italian feel: waterfront towns, mountain views and a slower pace in Ticino.

Best for: Two or three nights as part of a Switzerland or northern Italy route

01

Use Lugano as the base

Lugano is the easiest place to begin, with the lakefront, cafés and transport links close together. It works particularly well for a trip where the scenery matters as much as the itinerary.

02

Spend time by the water

The lake is the point. Keep an afternoon clear for the promenade, a boat journey or a long lunch beside the water rather than filling every hour with stops.

03

Make room for the views

The surrounding mountains change the scale of the lake completely. Pick one viewpoint or gentle hike that matches the season and leave yourself time to enjoy it.

04

Lean into Ticino’s Italian side

This is Switzerland with a distinct southern feel. Enjoy the slower evenings, Italian-influenced food and the fact that you do not need to rush through it.

Practical guide

Getting around

  • • Lugano is easy on foot around the lakefront and centre.
  • • Use local buses for nearby neighbourhoods; lake boats are a scenic way to move between towns.
  • • A car is useful only if you want quieter villages or a flexible mountain day—parking in central Lugano is limited.

Best areas

  • • Lugano centre for a first visit, restaurants and transport.
  • • Paradiso for a quieter lakefront base close to the city.
  • • Morcote for a small-village feel, best if you are happy with a slower, less central stay.

Best things to do

  • • Walk the Lugano lakefront and Parco Ciani.
  • • Take a lake boat to Morcote or Gandria.
  • • Choose one mountain viewpoint such as Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore, weather permitting.
