Milan · Lake Como

Milan & Lake Como.

Pair Milan’s energy with a few slower days on Lake Como for a city-and-lake itinerary that is easy to shape around your own pace.

Best for: Four to five nights, or a longer northern Italy trip

01

Start with Milan

Milan is more than a quick arrival point. Give it time for neighbourhood walks, aperitivo, architecture and a proper first evening before moving on to the lake.

02

Choose one Lake Como base

Rather than changing hotels every night, choose a base that suits the feel you want: lively and connected, quiet and romantic, or somewhere with easy ferry access.

03

Use the ferries as part of the day

The lake is at its best when the journey is part of the plan. Pick a couple of villages, take the boat between them and leave time to sit by the water.

04

Don’t overload the itinerary

Milan and Lake Como work because they contrast. Let Milan be the fuller city portion, then keep the lake days deliberately open.

Practical guide

Getting around

  • • Milan is best by metro, tram and walking; avoid relying on a car in the centre.
  • • Trains run from Milan to Como and other lake gateways.
  • • On Lake Como, ferries are the useful link between villages; buy tickets at the dock and check the final boat back.
  • • A car is helpful for less-connected villages but can be more hassle than help in the busiest lakeside towns.

Best areas

  • • Brera in Milan for a central, walkable first stay.
  • • Navigli for evenings and a more local restaurant-and-bar feel.
  • • Como town for easy rail access and ferry connections, or Varenna for a more romantic lakeside base.

Best things to do

  • • See Milan’s Duomo and explore Brera at a slower pace.
  • • Take the ferry between Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio.
  • • Choose one villa or garden visit rather than trying to fit in every lakeside stop.
