Oeschinensee.

How to get to Oeschinen Lake from Kandersteg, without making the journey more complicated than it needs to be.

My Oeschinensee day-trip tutorial became my best-performing Switzerland TikTok, reaching 160K+ views. This is the longer version: the route, current cable-car details and the practical things worth knowing before you go.

The simple version

Kandersteg → cable car → Oeschinensee

If you are using public transport, the easiest route is to travel to Kandersteg station, walk to the cable-car valley station, take the gondola up and then walk from the mountain station to the lake.

01

Get to Kandersteg

Take the train to Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. From the station, the Oeschinensee cable-car valley station is around a 10–15 minute walk. A local bus also runs during the main summer period.

02

Take the cable car up

The gondola takes you from Kandersteg up to the Oeschinensee mountain station. Booking online in advance is worth doing in busy periods because a Boarding Pass gives you a preferred time slot for the ascent.

03

Walk to the lake

From the mountain station, allow roughly 30 minutes on foot to reach the shore of Oeschinensee. The standard route is straightforward and is listed by Oeschinensee as suitable for strollers.

04

Give yourself time there

Do not plan this as a quick photo stop. Leave time for the lake itself and add extra time if you want to hike, row on the lake or use the mountain coaster when it is operating.

My tip

The higher trail views are worth leaving extra time for.

The lake looks completely different once you gain some height. If the weather and trail conditions are good, do not rush straight back to the cable car after reaching the shore.

Before you go

Things that are useful to know

You cannot drive to the lake shore. The private road is closed to motorised traffic and bicycles. If you skip the gondola, the hike from the valley area to the lake is roughly 90 minutes.

Book the cable car ahead in busy periods. Oeschinensee recommends online smart ticketing, and the Boarding Pass secures a preferred ascent time slot.

Check the live status on the day. Weather affects mountain activities. The official live page shows the current status of the cable car, hiking trails, mountain coaster, rowing boats and other facilities.

Allow more than a couple of hours. The transport is only part of the day. A half-day is a sensible minimum; give yourself longer if you want to hike or spend proper time around the lake.
