Morocco · Atlantic coast

Essaouira, Morocco.

A relaxed coastal city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, known for its medina, harbour and long sandy beach.

In the medina

Colour, craft and sea air.

The medina is where I would spend the most time: little lanes lined with woven textiles, painted woodwork and small shops, all with the Atlantic never far away. It is compact enough to explore without a plan, which is part of its charm.

The coast

A slower kind of beach day.

Essaouira’s beach is broad, breezy and made for long walks rather than an all-day sunbed routine. Go down towards evening for the softer light, then head back into the medina for dinner.

My favourite combination

A slow medina morning, the ramparts in the afternoon, then the beach at sunset. It gives you the best contrast of the city in one very easy day.
