Salzburg
A compact city of grand squares, river views and a fortress that appears around every turn.

The feel of it
A city made for wandering.
Salzburg is at its best when you give the old town time. Start in Mirabell Gardens for one of the clearest views of Hohensalzburg Fortress, then cross the river and follow the streets through the historic centre.
The city is small enough to explore without a rigid plan: stop by Mozart's birthplace, take in the riverfront skyline, and leave time for the squares and lanes after dark.
