Kefalonia Guide.

Kefalonia is large, mountainous and visually dramatic. The island mixes famous beaches with green hills, colourful villages and long scenic drives, so it suits travellers who enjoy exploring rather than staying in one resort.

Best for

Big landscapes, beaches, mountain roads and villages

How long

5–7 days

Getting there

Kefalonia has an airport and seasonal ferry connections with mainland Greece and neighbouring islands.

Plan your stay

Treat it as a road-trip island, not a single-resort stay.

Kefalonia is large, mountainous and full of long drives, villages and beaches. It rewards choosing an area each day rather than trying to cross the whole island repeatedly.

Explore the north separately

Fiskardo, Assos and Myrtos are best combined as one scenic day rather than a rushed detour.

Leave time for mountain roads

The drives are part of the experience, so keep the daily plan light.

Mix famous beaches with villages

The island is strongest when you balance the headline stops with long lunches and smaller coastal villages.

Where to stay

Argostoli is central and practical; Sami suits east-coast exploring; Fiskardo is beautiful but farther north and better as a deliberate choice.

Getting around

A car is essential for seeing Kefalonia properly. Distances and mountain roads make public-transport-only itineraries restrictive.

How long to stay

Five nights is a sensible minimum; a week is much better if you want beaches, villages and the north without rushing.

Good to know

Before you go

Distances are significant compared with the smaller Cyclades. A car is one of the most useful things you can have here.
